Endocrinology is a sub-specialty within the field of internal medicine. Endocrinologists diagnose and treat diseases associated with internal glandular secretions, also known as hormones. Hormones are signals by which glands regulate other body parts and organs, and the field of endocrinology studies hormonal disturbances. Included in the specialty of endocrinology are diseases of diabetes, the thyroid, cholesterol disorders, hypertension, osteoporosis, adrenal and pituitary glands, hormonal disorders causing infertility, low blood sugar, to name the major types of problems endocrinology deals with. While many of the endocrine diseases can be treated by general internists or other subspecialists, endocrinologists are highly trained specialists in these conditions and have the highest level of understanding when it comes to the treatment of hormonal diseases.
